How To Use This
This takes about five minutes. Nobody sees your answers, and there is no score at the end.
It is not a test of whether you are a good director. Most people join a board because someone asked them and the cause mattered, not because anyone sat them down and explained the job. These ten questions are the explaining part, done backwards.
Answer Yes, Sometimes, or Not Yet. At the end you will get a short list of small things you could do, and only for the ones you answered Not Yet.

If You Want To Bring This To Your Board
Some of these questions are about you. Some of them are really about how your board works, and one director cannot fix those alone.
There is a longer version, twenty questions, that a whole board can do together in about twenty minutes. If you would like your board to try it, here is a way to raise it that does not sound like a complaint:
“I came across a short set of questions for boards, and it made me realize there are a couple of things I would like us all to be clearer on. Could we spend twenty minutes on it at a meeting this year?”
Put it on an agenda rather than sending it round by email. Things sent round by email get read by two people.
One Last Thing
Nobody arrives at a board table knowing all of this. The directors who are good at it are just the ones who kept asking.
You do not have to work any of this out on your own, and you do not have to be the one who fixes it either. If you want to know what help looks like for a board your size, just ask.
